Position Overview Matrix is seeking experienced independent IT professionals to join our professional contractor network as Information Technology (IT) Consultants — Legal & Public Sector.

Contractors receive project-based assignments from Matrix based on individual client Work Orders. Assignments may involve technology strategy, infrastructure assessment, cybersecurity, systems optimization, digital transformation, technology implementation, vendor evaluation, data governance or other authorized technology consulting services.

This role is suited to experienced IT consultants and technology professionals who can operate effectively in professional, institutional and high-accountability environments where confidentiality, security, reliability and sound professional judgment are essential.

Client assignments may involve law firms, government ministries, courts and tribunals, professional organizations, regulated environments, corporations or other complex institutions.

Assignments may be performed remotely or may require attendance at a client site for project meetings, technology assessments, workshops, implementation activities, stakeholder engagement or other project requirements.

Depending on the assignment, contractors may work independently or collaborate with Matrix advisors, technical specialists and other professionals.

The contractor is responsible for independently determining the manner, method, sequence and tools used to complete an assignment, subject to the applicable client Work Order, required deliverables, agreed timelines, security and confidentiality requirements, and client-specific technical requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Assessment

  • Assess existing IT infrastructure, systems, applications and technology controls.
  • Evaluate technology environments and identify operational or technical improvement opportunities.
  • Develop technology assessments, recommendations and implementation roadmaps.
  • Align technology recommendations with client objectives, operational requirements and institutional priorities.
  • Identify technology risks, dependencies and implementation considerations.
  • Prepare technical findings and recommendations for appropriate client stakeholders.

Infrastructure & Digital Transformation

  • Support infrastructure modernization initiatives.
  • Advise on cloud adoption, migration and technology transition projects.
  • Support digital transformation and technology implementation initiatives.
  • Assess systems integration and technology dependencies.
  • Assist with technology architecture and systems optimization where within the scope of the Work Order.
  • Support implementation planning and project documentation.

Cybersecurity, Privacy & Data Governance

  • Assess cybersecurity controls and technology-related risks.
  • Provide advisory support regarding information security practices.
  • Assist with data governance and information-management initiatives.
  • Support privacy and data-protection assessments within the consultant's area of expertise.
  • Identify technology-related vulnerabilities, risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare technical risk assessments and recommendations.
  • Escalate significant security or privacy concerns through the appropriate client or Matrix channels.

Legal & Professional Technology

For applicable client assignments, assess, evaluate or support technology platforms such as:

  • legal practice-management systems;
  • case-management systems;
  • document-management platforms;
  • electronic discovery and litigation-support systems;
  • secure file-sharing and collaboration platforms;
  • workflow and automation systems;
  • enterprise applications;
  • cloud platforms; and
  • other specialized professional or institutional technology.

Experience with legal and court technology environments is particularly valuable but is not required for every assignment.

Technology Vendor & Implementation Support

  • Assist clients with technology vendor evaluations.
  • Support requirements gathering and technology selection processes.
  • Review technology proposals and implementation documentation.
  • Assist with implementation planning and project governance.
  • Coordinate technical information between vendors, client stakeholders and project teams.
  • Monitor project deliverables within the scope of the assigned Work Order.
  • Document implementation issues, decisions and outstanding requirements.

Technical Documentation & Advisory Reporting

  • Prepare technical assessments and project documentation.
  • Develop executive-level technical summaries and briefing materials.
  • Document systems, processes, risks and recommendations.
  • Prepare project status reports and implementation documentation.
  • Translate technical concepts into clear information for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Maintain appropriate records of project activities and deliverables.

Assignment & Project Management

  • Review and interpret client Work Orders and project requirements.
  • Independently organize and manage assigned technology projects.
  • Determine appropriate methods, sequencing and resources for completing required deliverables.
  • Track project progress and provide status updates through Matrix's designated online project-management and collaboration platform.
  • Identify dependencies, risks or issues requiring client direction.
  • Complete agreed deliverables within established timelines and project parameters.
  • Collaborate with Matrix and authorized client representatives as required.

Client-Site & Stakeholder Engagement

Depending on the Work Order, assignments may require attendance at:

  • law firms;
  • government offices and ministries;
  • courts or tribunals;
  • corporate offices;
  • professional practices;
  • technology facilities;
  • client operational locations; and
  • other authorized sites.

Client-site activities may include technology assessments, stakeholder meetings, workshops, implementation support, systems reviews, information gathering and project coordination.

Core Qualifications

  • 5–10+ years of relevant IT consulting, technology management, systems, infrastructure, cybersecurity or related professional experience.
  • Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, cloud environments and technology systems.
  • Experience assessing technology environments and developing practical recommendations.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity and information-security principles.
  • Knowledge of data governance, privacy and information-management considerations.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting technology projects, implementations or transformations.
  • Strong analytical, documentation and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage project assignments.
  • High level of professionalism and discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Ability to operate an independent professional practice and provide services on a project basis.

Relevant Technology Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is an asset:

  • Microsoft 365;
  • Azure;
  • AWS;

  • identity and access management;
  • enterprise applications;

  • case-management systems;
  • legal practice-management platforms;

Legal & Public-Sector Experience

Experience supporting one or more of the following environments is strongly preferred:

  • law firms or legal service organizations;
  • courts or tribunals;
  • government ministries or agencies;
  • regulatory organizations;
  • professional services organizations;
  • healthcare or other regulated environments;
  • financial or insurance organizations; or
  • institutions with high confidentiality, privacy or security requirements.

Familiarity with legal, court or public-sector technology environments is an asset.

Certifications & Professional Credentials

Relevant professional certifications may include:

  • CISSP;
  • CISM;
  • PMP;
  • ITIL;
  • Microsoft certifications;
  • AWS certifications;
  • CompTIA certifications;
  • cloud or cybersecurity credentials; or
  • equivalent professional qualifications.

Certifications are considered an asset and are not necessarily required where equivalent professional experience can be demonstrated.

Independent Contractor Engagement

This is an independent contractor, project-based engagement and not an employment position.

Contractors manage their assigned projects independently and are responsible for determining the manner, method, sequence and tools used to perform the work, subject to the applicable Work Order, required deliverables, agreed timelines, confidentiality obligations, security requirements and client-specific requirements.

Matrix provides the client relationship, assignment scope and required deliverables. Contractors independently manage the execution of their assignments and use Matrix's designated online project-management and collaboration platform to receive Work Orders, access assignment information, provide status updates and collaborate with Matrix and authorized client contacts as required.

Contractors may accept assignments based on their availability, qualifications, experience and capacity.

Contractors are responsible for maintaining the professional capabilities, equipment, technology and other resources necessary to perform their assignments, except where otherwise agreed for a specific project.

Contractors are responsible for their own applicable taxes, government remittances, insurance, business expenses and other obligations arising from their independent business activities.

Nothing in the contractor relationship creates an employment, partnership, joint-venture or agency relationship between the contractor and Matrix or the client.

Work Environment

Assignments may be:

  • fully remote;
  • hybrid;
  • client-site based;
  • project-site based; or
  • a combination of remote and in-person work.

The nature, location, scope and duration of each assignment will depend on the applicable client Work Order.

Contractors should be comfortable working across different organizations, industries, technologies and professional environments.
