Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking an Associate Professor in Medicine (Cardiology) to join the Department of Medicine within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

This senior academic role offers an opportunity to make a significant contribution to cardiology through clinical teaching, research, supervision, service, and leadership. You will play a critical role in advancing undergraduate and postgraduate medical education while developing and leading a research programme aligned with the strategic priorities of the Department of Medicine.

Working closely with colleagues across the University and Health New Zealand-Te Toka Tumai Auckland, you will contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching programmes, supervise postgraduate research students, and pursue innovative research that enhances the profile and impact of the Department nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will be expected to build collaborative research partnerships, secure external funding, contribute to curriculum development, and provide academic leadership within cardiology and the wider Department of Medicine. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a leading academic and clinical environment dedicated to excellence in education, research, and patient outcomes.

This is a part-time, 4 hours per week, on a permanent contract. The salary for this role is $165,808 + $57,798 medical loading per annum (pro rata).

We are looking for an accomplished academic cardiologist with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and clinical excellence.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

• A medical qualification registrable in New Zealand.
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or an equivalent cardiology qualification.
• Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, or eligibility to obtain registration.
• A PhD and/or MD qualification.
• Eligibility to be employed within the Cardiology Service at Health New Zealand-Te Toka Tumai Auckland.
• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Experience supervising research students, including doctoral candidates.
• A strong track record of research achievement, including publications and successful research activity.
• Experience developing collaborative research programmes and partnerships.
• The ability to attract research funding and build a sustainable research programme.
• Strong organisational, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• A commitment to equity in education and healthcare delivery.
• A passion for advancing cardiology through teaching, research, and service.
